Methylmagnesium Bromide (CAS 75-16-1) is an organomagnesium compound (Grignard reagent) with molecular formula CH3BrMg. It is supplied as a typical 35% solution in Diethylether.

In organic synthesis it is used in Grignard-type reactions as a reactive carbon nucleophile or in deprotonation reactions as a base.

Methylmagnesium Bromide reacts readily with moisture and oxygen and should be handled under dry, inert conditions. Consult the SDS and site-specific procedures for compatible materials, fire response, and storage.

    Method of Analysis

Determination of assay as total base by acidimetric titration after hydrolysis; detailed description available on request.

    Handling Instructions

Organomagnesium compounds should only be handled under inert gas (nitrogen orargon). Never add water, acids or oxidizing materials to the product. Vapors mayform explosive mixtures with air. Vapors are heavier than air and may spread alongfloors. Flash back possible over considerable distance. Use only explosion proofequipment. Protect from frost, heat and sunlight. In case of fire use dryextinguishers on basis of sodium chloride or limestone powder. Never use water orCO2-extinguishers. Pay attention to official safety regulations (see also: ”Transportregulations” and “GHS Hazard Pictograms“).

    Storage Instructions

When stored according to SDS the material is fairly stable. We still recommend toretest the material 6 months after date of analysis if included on CoA. If notincluded, use the date of manufacturing for the calculation.Keep container dry and tightly closed. As the material tends to crystallise at lowertemperatures it should be stored above 0°C.
