Reducción selectiva de ésteres, ácidos carboxílicos, amidas, epóxidos, cetonas y aldehídos en presencia de otros grupos funcionales como nitrilos, grupos nitro, alquenos y haluros. La adición de una cantidad estequiométrica de metanol aumenta significativamente el poder reductor sin afectar la selectividad.
