Lithium Production in the Atacama Desert: CNN’s ‘Supercharged’ visits the Salar de Atacama

Lithium in the desertIn January 2020, Nicki Shields, anchor of CNN series ‘Supercharged,” visited the Salar de Atacama to learn more about how lithium batteries come to life. The show takes a look at all things related to the popular racing sport of Formula E. This episode, which aired on February 1, 2020, features Albemarle’s own Chile Country Manager, Ellen Lenny-Pessagno.

About 8:30 minutes into the program, Shields is seen visiting the Salar de Atacama – the place where our lithium production process in Chile begins. “Formula E wouldn’t exist without lithium batteries,” said Ellen. “This salt flat where we operate provides enough lithium in one year to build 1.2 million electric vehicles annually.”
