Job Description

        

SUMMARY

Operates a full range of machine tools such as lathes, drills, grinders, and boring mills to make new or replacement parts.  Installs and fits parts in equipment being repaired.  Install, troubleshoot and repair all mechanical rotating equipment utilized in the day-to-day manufacturing processes in a chemical plant.  Must be able to understand and follow safe work practices and procedures. Generally, receives only broad supervision of work.  Typically requires the equivalent of four-year journey level apprenticeship, including classroom work in shop math, blueprint reading, and shop theory, as well as practical operating experience and some general seasoning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reads and interprets prints and sketches, or measures existing parts and prepares sketches of parts to be manufactured.

Lays out work in planned sequence of operations to make and install required parts to appropriate tolerances.

Sets up and operates standard machine tools.

Determines feeds, speeds, lubricant, and cutting tool requirements using knowledge of the working properties of common metals.

Fits matching parts in the shop or field by hand as required.

Understands the function of the parts fabricated or repaired.

Should have some pipefitting experience including valve installation and repair, installing slip blinds, opening and closing process piping systems, layout and installation of screwed piping systems.

Should be able to perform rigging work associated with machinist work as well as rigging associated with other crafts

Efforts Demanded:  Lifting up to 50 lbs., frequent walking, bending, stooping, balancing, ascending and descending ladders, operating various mobile equipment, pulling, crouching, twisting and reaching. 

Must be able to install, troubleshoot and repair centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors.  Repair and install all types of mechanical seals.  Level and align all types of rotating machinery.  Repair all types of mechanical and fluid drive equipment.

Must be able to work in unison with other craftsmen to accomplish job objectives.

Knowledge of SAP preferred.

Ability to plan mechanical work.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED required.  Craft NCCER or equivalent with minimum of four years’ experience preferred.  

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Possess effective communication skills for interaction with all chemical plant employees. 

Ability to receive verbal and written direction including plant safety rules, policies and procedures and implement without direct supervision.
