Western Australia

Albemarle’s investment in Australia began in 2014 with the acquisition of Rockwood Holdings. As a result, since this time, the company has been focused on establishing a strong presence and new operations across the region.

As part of the acquisition, Albemarle acquired a 49% share in Talison Lithium Pty Ltd., the world’s leading spodumene producer. Located in Greenbushes, Western Australia, the mine, which has a current mine life of 40 years, is predicted to produce nearly 160,000 metric tons per year.

In 2019, Albemarle began earthworks at the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area, also located in Western Australia. Commissioning of this site, scheduled to begin in 2021, will become home to our Kemerton lithium hydroxide (LiOH) conversion plant. It is expected to have an initial capacity of 60,000 to 75,000 metric tons of LiOH, with an ability to expand to 100,000 metric tons over time.
