Fluid Catalytic Cracking

For over 50 years, Albemarle’s catalyst team has focused on developing, manufacturing and optimizing a robust portfolio of catalysts and additives used for the conversion of a wide range of feedstocks. These products have brought improved performance to numerous refineries around the world.

That work continues today using smart feed characterization, plus our extensive laboratory, pilot-plant and commercial performance evaluations. We utilize proprietary, cutting-edge models to simulate specific feedstock characteristics and operating conditions so that we can select and optimize the proper catalysts to meet our customer’s unique needs. These analyses and performance evaluations are conducted through close coordination between our customers and our highly trained technical specialists.

Modern FCC units process a variety of feedstocks. To maximize profitability ,the unit is pushed to one or more constraints, which depend on the feedstock being processed, the unit configuration and the mode of operation. With a properly tuned FCC catalyst and additives, the unit operating window is increased, thereby giving the flexibility to process heavier and cheaper feedstocks or increase unit severity for maximum conversion to higher margins lighter products.

Albemarle has built up considerable know-how in designing and selecting the right catalytic solutions for every application. This know-how is based on smart feed characterization, extensive pilot plant and commercial performance evaluation, cooperation with customers and the use of a kinetic FCC model.

Albemarle provides a full range of FCC catalysts for all applications. Albemarle FCC catalysts feature premium components, including one or more of the full range of Albemarle-developed zeolites (ZT) and matrices (MT). Catalyst performance is enhanced by applying appropriate metal trapping technology and by using unique manufacturing technologies that ensure that a catalyst provides high accessibility for the feed molecules to the zeolite and the matrix for maximum bottoms cracking.

Albemarle has developed and produces some of the highest-accessibility (i.e., best mass transfer/diffusion properties) catalysts on the market. Our technical service specialists will help you in the selection process and then provide guidance to help you achieve your profit goals.

Albemarle Accessibility Index (AAI)

AAI measures the diffusional properties of a catalyst. A higher AAI catalyst is better equipped to crack bottoms and reduce deleterious secondary reactions.
