National Engineers Week: Meet Zhaogao (Jack) Luan
February 20-26th is National Engineers Week. This week is dedicated to the notable and influential work engineers do every day. We hope to inspire you to learn about their contributions and hope others choose a career in engineering and technology. We want to introduce you to the significant contributions our Albemarle Employees are making every single day.
Check out career opportunities at Albemarle Corporation.

Engineer Spotlight: Zhaogao (Jack) Luan
Zhaogao (Jack) Luan is a Mechanical Engineering Advisor for our Structural Mechanical Piping Design-Capital Projects at our Albemarle's Clear Lake location in Houston, Texas. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University. He's published seven journal papers on Heat Transfer Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics and another two on Biofluid Mechanics.
He has been married for 6 years and has two children: a daughter and a son. Luan says he loves traveling, reading, watching movies, and gardening.
Luan is enthusiastic and energetic about his job as a Mechanical Engineer. His co-workers describe him as knowledgeable, diligent, and respectful.
How did you end up at Albemarle?
Zhaogao Luan: I spent 15 years working in the oil and gas industry until I came to Albemarle Corporation in September 2021. Concerns over climate change due to fossil fuels made me think of a career away from that industry. Albemarle provided an opportunity to be part of the world's digitization and electrification force. I couldn't pass it up. Albemarle is a global lithium producer, and I believe the company is working to create a more sustainable world. The general and unstoppable trend of the world is to reduce carbon emissions and go green. I want to follow my heart and follow this trend.
Tell us about a project you are proud to be a part of:
Zhaogao Luan: I'm proud to support corporate and site projects as the Mechanical Engineering Manager. I coordinate with vendors providing equipment and services. I also enhance and develop corporate engineering standards. Since joining Albemarle late last year, I have been involved in multiple projects in our plants located in the U.S., Germany, Taiwan, and the Middle East.
I recently was involved in a Taiwan project which aims to reduce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions by installing a thermal Oxidizer. The thermal Oxidizer destroys these hazardous gases via thermal combustion. I contributed to reducing pollution and protecting our earth. I feel proud of getting involved in projects like these.
