Albemarle’s Amy Dunbar is “Out for Blood”

Albemarle employees have a rich history of uniting together to Grow the Good through the work of the Albemarle Foundation. Today, Albemarle VP & Treasurer Amy Dunbar, begins a 10-week fundraising effort to help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives and earn the title of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Woman of the Year. Amy's team – Out for Blood – will be raising funds to support the important cause, and every dollar that is raised will count as one vote for Amy. The candidate whose team tallies the most votes will earn the prestigious title of "Man or Woman of the Year."

Man & Woman of the Year is philanthropic competition put on by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to support blood cancer research. Candidates form powerful fundraising teams and compete in honor of two local children who are blood cancer survivors. LLS uses donations to help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.

Many of us have been impacted in some way by cancer, including Amy. Her father, Elwood Massey, lost his blood cancer battle against B-cell Prolymphocytic Leukemia (B-PLL) on April 1, 2019, just one day short of his 86th birthday. Amy works to raise money for LLS in memory of her father. Her passion for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is driven by a desire to save other families from the devastation of blood cancers.

“We are so proud of all that our father accomplished in his life," said Amy. “He was a compassionate and loving man with a bright smile. He worked extremely hard to support our family and instilled strong values into each of his four children. It is for our father, his extraordinary life and this horrible disease, that this effort is so meaningful."
