Formulations designed for wire and cable (W&C) insulation, jacketing, and shielding must take into account demanding specifications and regulations with well-defined end-use requirements. Compounding ingredients such as flame retardants are designed around these requirements.

Flame retardants are used in wire and cable applications for two reasons: initially, to prevent any arcing igniting the compound and, subsequently, to prevent the spread of fire throughout a structure along the wiring. Many types of flame retardants are used in wire and cable, including metal hydroxides (such as Aluminum Trihydrate, or ATH, and Magnesium Dihydroxide, or MDH), and bromine-based products.

SAYTEX® 102E flame retardant is a very effective flame retardant with high % bromine (83%) and high thermal stability (approximately 300°C). Although it is a common FR used in wire & cable, it “blooms,” which affects appearance, moisture resistance, and electrical properties.

SAYTEX 8010 flame retardant offers good UV resistance, very good thermal stability, low blooming characteristics, high-bromine content and is well-suited for applications requiring color stability, or where recycling is anticipated.

SAYTEX BT-93 brominated flame retardant is very thermally stable (over 450°C), with excellent flame retardant efficiency. It does not bloom, which leads to better moisture resistance and electrical properties. It is ideal for high end applications where performance is at a premium.

Over the past 15 years, halogen-free flame retardant cable systems have gained large market share, especially in Europe. MARTINAL® (ATH) and MAGNIFIN® (MDH) flame retardants are the perfect choice for halogen-free FR cable formulations, and come in a wide variety of particle sizes, coated and uncoated grades to optimize the cost/performance balance of your formulations while meeting myriad specifications and regulations.
