Textiles
line

Though some textiles are more combustible than others, all fabrics will burn.

Most synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, acrylic or polyester resist ignition. Once ignited, however, even these textiles can liquefy as other plastics do. Hot, sticky, and melting, synthetic fabrics can cause localized and extremely severe burns, or drip onto other more combustible materials, leading to flash fires.

With the exceptions of California and the United Kingdom, where upholstered furniture must comply with strong flammability requirements, flame retardants are NOT currently used in most residential upholstered furniture fabrics.

That’s why Albemarle takes a strong stand with fire safety issues in the home, and why we offer manufacturers a solid line of cost-effective flame retardants that do their job well.

To ensure maximum consumer safety, textiles in carpet backings and other upholstered fabrics should be flame retarded before being used in manufactured goods. The treatments can reduce burning rates and increase the amount of time available for people to escape a home or apartment if and when there is a fire.

And to help FR textile manufacturers protect their customers and their business, Albemarle offers several brominated and metal hydroxide additives for FR textile manufacturing, beginning with the table below.

All fabrics will burn. But we can help you make fabrics that resist fire and reduce smoke longer than others. If you don’t find something you’re looking for there, please contact us to see how we can help you.
