Albemarle has been involved in Organometallics and Polyolefin Catalyst activities for many years. These businesses were initially based upon organometallics technology developed to manufacture tetraethyl lead in the 1920's.

Since the 1950's, Albemarle has been a leading global producer of organometallics with widespread applications especially in the Polyolefin & Elastomers industries, but increasingly also in Electronics and Fine Chemicals.

With strengths in organometallic chemistry, Albemarle first synthesized a wide range of metallocenes for octane enhancement and then for single site catalysts (SSC). More recently the business has become the leading supplier of SSC Activators and offers Custom Catalyst Development and Manufacture to its customers.
