Protecting the environment
line

Albemarle has steadily improved our environmental performance. We continuously strive to reduce wastes and emissions created by our operation. Our efforts to reduce the impact of our operations include:

Magnolia Marshes and Wetlands Bank – Two sites in Magnolia Arkansas have created marshes that are used as environmental classrooms for local schools. The plant has also created the first industrial sponsored wetlands bank (101 acres) in Arkansas.

Orangeburg’s Renewable Steam – The Orangeburg site took the initiative more that 20 years ago to establish a renewal source of energy for the plants stream requirements. The site assisted a local business to install steam boilers powered by waste wood chips from local timber mills. Today, more than 50% of the plants steam is provided by these boilers.

Pasadena Reduces Nox – Before the Houston area started taking steps to meet the ozone attainment requirements; the Pasadena sites began to eliminate nitrous oxide emissions from the operation. Since 1999, Nox emissions have been reduced 90%, which is the equivalent of emissions from 45,000 cars!

Tyrone Reduces Hazardous Waste – In 2003, the Tyrone site brought on line a Macro Porous Polymer Extraction System.

Bergheim Co-Generates – Albemarle’s Bergheim Germany plant uses local coal to generate electricity for the site as well as steam for the operations. The co-generation plant utilizes state-of-the-art emission controls and monitoring systems to meet high-level environmental requirements. The plant exports excess electricity for local residents.
